MEETING OF THE SCIENTIFIC COUNCIL

RÉUNION DU CONSEIL SCIENTIFIQUE

The CIMPA Scientific Council met on November 14 and 15, 2024 at the Institut Henri Poincaré to review the project proposals for the 2026 CIMPA Schools. The meeting was held in a hybrid format.

The CIMPA warmly extends its gratitude to the members of the Scientific Council for their dedication, time, and energy. This meeting also marked the final participation of several members reaching the end of their terms. Their invaluable expertise and commitment over the years have been deeply appreciated, and we are sincerely thankful for their contributions.

The final selection of schools will be made at the next CIMPA Steering Committee meeting at Technische Universität Berlin on January 30 and 31 2025.

Le Conseil scientifique du CIMPA s'est réuni les 14 et 15 novembre 2024 à l'Institut Henri Poincaré pour examiner les propositions de projets pour les Écoles CIMPA 2026. La réunion s'est tenue dans un format hybride.

Le CIMPA tient à remercier chaleureusement les membres du Conseil scientifique pour leur dévouement, leur temps et leur énergie. Cette réunion a également été l’occasion de saluer plusieurs membres qui achèvent leur mandat. Leur expertise et leur engagement au fil des années ont été d’une valeur inestimable, et nous leur en sommes profondément reconnaissants.

La sélection finale des écoles sera faite lors de la prochaine réunion du Comité de pilotage du CIMPA à la Technische Universität Berlin les 30 et 31 janvier 2025.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE FIRST LIE-STØRMER-CIMPA FELLOWSHIP LAUREATES!

LES PREMIERS LAURÉATS DE LA BOURSE LIE-STØRMER-CIMPA À L'HONNEUR !

We are delighted to introduce Ngwongwo Ignatius (Federal University of Technology Owerri, Nigeria) and Yadav Rohit (Indian Institute of Technology Jammu, india), who travelled to Norway for a month-long research stay at the prestigious Lie-Størmer Center.

From mid-October to mid-November, they collaborated with esteemed researchers, including Cordian Riener and Hans Munthe-Kaas, making this fellowship a significant milestone in their academic journey.

We are pleased to support initiatives that encourage collaboration and enable the laureates to enrich their academic careers.

Nous sommes ravis de vous présenter Ngwongwo Ignatius (Federal University of Technology Owerri, Nigeria) et Yadav Rohit (Indian Institute of Technology Jammu, Inde), qui se sont rendus en Norvège pour un séjour de recherche d'un mois au prestigieux Lie-Størmer Center.

De la mi-octobre à la mi-novembre, ils ont collaboré avec d'éminents chercheurs, dont Cordian Riener et Hans Munthe-Kaas, faisant de cette bourse une étape importante de leur parcours universitaire.

SEAMS School on Arithmetic Algebraic Geometry in Vietnam

A SEAMS School was held at the Institute of Mathematics, Vietnam, from October 28 to November 8, 2024. This event brought together in hybrid mode 57 participants, including 15 international students from Southeast Asia and 42 Vietnamese students. These participants included individuals enrolled in undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programmes. Thanks to CIMPA’s financial support, 9 students were able to secure funding to attend this event.

The school was a resounding success: participants had the opportunity to delve into various topics in arithmetic algebraic geometry, learn about recent advances in this field of research, and engage with renowned professors during the different talks.

Additionally, Christophe Ritzenthaler travelled to Hanoi to attend the school. Accompanied by the CIMPA secretary, Viet Dung Nguyen, they could meet several of the main local actors: Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM), The Vietnam Mathematical Society (VMS), the Vietnam-France University (USTH), the Thai Nguyen University of Education.

The visit revealed the great vitality of the mathematical community in Hanoï, the national wish of a reinforcement of applied and industrial research and the will to play a regional role in the training of future mathematicians. CIMPA will be glad to continue to support the various initiatives in these directions.

École SEAMS sur quelques sujets de géométrie algébrique et arithmétique au Vietnam

Une École SEAMS s’est tenue à l’Institut de Mathématiques du Vietnam du 28 octobre au 8 novembre 2024. Cet événement a rassemblé en mode hybride 57 participantes et participants, dont 15 étudiantes et étudiants internationaux originaires d’Asie du Sud-Est, ainsi que 42 étudiantes et étudiants vietnamiens. Ces derniers incluaient des personnes inscrites en licence, en master et en doctorat. Grâce au soutien financier de CIMPA, 9 étudiantes et étudiants ont pu bénéficier d’un financement pour participer à cet événement.

L’école a été un véritable succès : les participantes et participants ont eu l’opportunité d’explorer divers sujets en géométrie algébrique arithmétique, de découvrir les avancées récentes dans ce domaine de recherche, et d’échanger avec des professeures et professeurs de renom au cours des différents enseignements.

Par ailleurs, du 30 octobre au 10 novembre, le directeur de CIMPA, Christophe Ritzenthaler s’est rendu à Hanoï dans le cadre de cette école. Accompagné du secrétaire du CIMPA, Viet Dung Nguyen, ils ont rencontré des acteurs locaux clés, notamment l’Académie des Sciences et des Technologies du Vietnam (VAST), l’Institut Vietnamien pour l’Étude Avancée en Mathématiques (VIASM), la Société Mathématique Vietnamienne (VMS), l’Université Franco-Vietnamienne (USTH) et l’Université de Formation des Enseignants de Thai Nguyen.

Cette visite a mis en lumière la grande vitalité de la communauté mathématique à Hanoï, le souhait national de renforcer la recherche appliquée et industrielle, ainsi que la volonté de jouer un rôle régional dans la formation des futurs mathématiciennes et mathématiciens. Le CIMPA se réjouit de continuer à soutenir les diverses initiatives allant dans ces directions.

EMALCA La Habana: a successful event despite the challenges

The EMALCA-La Habana 2024 School took place from November 4 to 8 at the University of La Habana, focusing on Probability Theory. It brought together participants from Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, France, and the United States. This edition honoured Professor José Enrique Valdés Castro, who has inspired many generations of Cuban mathematicians with his passion for mathematics and probability.

The event faced disruptions due to Hurricane Rafael on November 6, which caused power outages and temporary closures. Thanks to the swift response of the university, the school was successfully relocated, and the scientific programme was adapted with extended lectures and educational materials provided to students.

Despite these challenges, the school fully achieved its objectives, thanks to the dedication and determination of all participants and organisers involved.

EMALCA La Habana : un évènement réussi malgré les défis

L’École EMALCA-La Habana 2024 s’est tenue du 4 au 8 novembre à l’université de La Habana, avec pour thème la théorie des probabilités, et a réuni des participantes et participants de Cuba, du Brésil, du Mexique, de Colombie, de France et des États-Unis. Cette édition a rendu hommage au professeur José Enrique Valdés Castro, qui a inspiré de nombreuses générations de mathématiciennes et mathématiciens cubains par sa passion pour les mathématiques et les probabilités.

L’événement a été perturbé par l’ouragan Rafael, survenu le 6 novembre, qui a entraîné des coupures de courant et des fermetures temporaires. Grâce à la réactivité de l’université, l'école a été relocalisée avec succès, et le programme scientifique a été adapté, avec des conférences rallongées et des supports pédagogiques fournis aux étudiantes et étudiants.

Malgré ces imprévus, l’école a pleinement atteint ses objectifs grâce à l’engagement et à la détermination de toutes les personnes présentes, qu’elles soient participantes ou organisatrices.

Looking back at the CIMPA course taught by Frédéric Van Wijland at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) of Libreville, Gabon

From October 25 to November 5, 2024, Frédéric Van Wijland, professor at the Université Paris Cité, delivered a CIMPA course at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Libreville, Gabon. The course focused on Statistics in High Dimension, exploring high-dimensional data and its various applications, including epidemic modelling and neural networks.

The course, aimed at Master’s and PhD students, fostered valuable academic exchanges with participants from Gabon and neighbouring countries.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the ENS of Libreville and the local contributors for their commitment to advancing science in Sub-Saharan Africa, often in challenging circumstances.

Retour sur le cours CIMPA dispensé par Frédéric Van Wijland à l'École Normale Supérieure (ENS) de Libreville, Gabon

Du 25 octobre au 5 novembre 2024, Frédéric Van Wijland, professeur à l'université Paris Cité, a donné un cours CIMPA à l'École Normale Supérieure (ENS) de Libreville, Gabon. Ce cours, intitulé "Statistics in High Dimension", portait sur les données de haute dimension et leurs diverses applications, allant de la modélisation des épidémies aux réseaux neuronaux.

Destiné aux étudiantes et étudiants de Master et de Doctorat, ce cours a permis des échanges académiques enrichissants avec des participantes et participants venant du Gabon et des pays voisins.

Nous tenons à exprimer notre sincère gratitude à l'ENS de Libreville et aux contributeurs locaux pour leur engagement à faire avancer la science en Afrique subsaharienne, souvent dans des conditions difficiles.

CIMPA Course on Machine Learning by Professor Bassem Ben Hamed at the University of Béjaïa

Professor Bassem Ben Hamed from the National School of Electronics and Telecommunications in Sfax, Tunisia, was invited to the University of Béjaïa in Algeria, where he delivered a CIMPA course titled "Introduction to Machine Learning: Theory and Applications". This course, which took place from November 10 to 14, 2024, was aimed at Master's and PhD students.

The main objectives of the course were as follows:

• To strengthen and enrich the knowledge of Master's students.
• To broaden the expertise of PhD students and help guide their research towards this field.

This visit provided students with the opportunity to benefit from Professor Ben Hamed’s experience in the field of Machine Learning, while also fostering academic and scientific exchanges.

Cours CIMPA sur le Machine Learning par le Professeur Bassem Ben Hamed à l’université de Béjaïa

Le professeur Bassem Ben Hamed de l’École Nationale d'Électronique et de Télécommunications de Sfax, Tunisie, a été invité à l’université de Béjaïa en Algérie, où il a dispensé un cours CIMPA intitulé "Introduction to Machine Learning : Theory and Applications". Ce cours, qui s’est déroulé du 10 au 14 novembre 2024, s’adressait aux étudiantes et étudiants de Master et de Doctorat.

Les objectifs principaux du cours étaient les suivants :

• Renforcer et enrichir les connaissances des étudiantes et étudiants de Master.
• Élargir l’expertise des doctorantes et doctorants et les aider à orienter leurs recherches vers ce domaine.

Ce séjour a offert aux étudiantes et étudiants l’opportunité de bénéficier de l’expérience du professeur Ben Hamed dans le domaine du Machine Learning, tout en favorisant les échanges académiques et scientifiques.

Complex Analysis Course by Anna Benini at the École Nationale Supérieure de Mathématiques, Algiers

From November 10 to 21, Anna Benini, a professor at the University of Parma in Italy, conducted a course on complex analysis at the National Higher School of Mathematics in Algiers, Algeria. First-year Master's students explored fundamental topics such as conformal mappings, Riemann surfaces, the Riemann mapping theorem, the classification of Riemann surfaces, and meromorphic functions on the Riemann sphere. This course provided an opportunity to delve into key concepts of complex analysis under the guidance of an experienced specialist in the field.

Du 10 au 21 novembre, Anna Benini, professeure à l’université de Parme en Italie, a animé un cours sur l’analyse complexe à l’École Nationale Supérieure de Mathématiques d’Alger, en Algérie. Les participantes et participants de première année de Master ont exploré des sujets fondamentaux tels que les applications conformes, les surfaces de Riemann, le théorème de représentation de Riemann, la classification des surfaces de Riemann et les fonctions méromorphes sur la sphère de Riemann. Ce cours a offert une occasion de se plonger dans des notions clés de l’analyse complexe avec une spécialiste reconnue dans ce domaine.
