NEW ACTUALITÉ

On December 3, 2024, the Iraq Math Day event was held online, bringing together Iraqi, Kurdish and French researchers, as well as Bernadette Chehu, scientific cooperation attaché at the French Embassy in Iraq, and Frédéric Hérau, head of international relations at INSMI. The aim was to take stock of mathematics departments in Iraqi and Kurdish universities, present advances in mathematical research and explore opportunities for collaboration and training between France and Iraq.

The programme included presentations on a variety of subjects, including algebra, number theory, numerical analysis, differential equations and statistics. These presentations, led by experts, attracted a large number of European and Iraqi participants, fostering enriching exchanges and highlighting the key role of mathematics in Iraq.

Le 3 dĂ©cembre 2024, l'Ă©vĂ©nement Iraq Math Day s'est tenu en ligne, rĂ©unissant des chercheuses et chercheurs irakiens, kurdes et français, ainsi que Bernadette Chehu, attachĂ©e de coopĂ©ration scientifique de l'ambassade de France en Irak et FrĂ©dĂ©ric HĂ©rau, responsable des relations internationales Ă  l’INSMI. L'objectif Ă©tait de dresser un Ă©tat des lieux des dĂ©partements de mathĂ©matiques dans les universitĂ©s irakiennes et kurdes, de prĂ©senter les avancĂ©es en recherche mathĂ©matique et d’explorer les opportunitĂ©s de collaboration et de formation entre la France et l’Irak.

Le programme comprenait des prĂ©sentations sur des sujets variĂ©s, tels que l’algĂšbre, la thĂ©orie des nombres, l’analyse numĂ©rique, les Ă©quations diffĂ©rentielles et les statistiques. Ces interventions, animĂ©es par une experte et des experts, ont attirĂ© de nombreux participantes et participants europĂ©ens et irakiens, favorisant des Ă©changes enrichissants et mettant en valeur le rĂŽle clĂ© des mathĂ©matiques en Irak.

ÉCOLES EN PARTENARIAT

A look back at the African Mathematical School in Mauritania.

From December 9 to 20, 2024, the African Mathematical School (EMA) "Differential Geometry and Applications" took place at the University of Nouakchott, under the coordination of Lessiad Ahmed Sid'Ahmed. The event brought together Master's students, doctoral students and researchers to deepen their knowledge of differential geometry and promote scientific exchanges between Africa, Europe and America.

The main aim of the school was to provide participants with a solid grounding in the fundamental and advanced concepts of differential geometry, enabling them to read specialised articles and tackle research problems requiring in-depth geometric expertise.

The school welcomed participants from Guinea, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Senegal and Mauritania. The event was also marked by the active participation of several women, underlining the importance of their involvement in mathematical research.

Retour sur l'École MathĂ©matique Africaine en Mauritanie.

Du 9 au 20 dĂ©cembre 2024, l’École MathĂ©matique Africaine (EMA) "GĂ©omĂ©trie DiffĂ©rentielle et Applications" s’est dĂ©roulĂ©e Ă  l’universitĂ© de Nouakchott, sous la coordination de Lessiad Ahmed Sid’Ahmed. Cet Ă©vĂ©nement a rassemblĂ© des Ă©tudiantes et Ă©tudiants de Master, des doctorantes et doctorants, ainsi que des chercheuses et chercheurs, pour approfondir leurs connaissances en gĂ©omĂ©trie diffĂ©rentielle et favoriser les Ă©changes scientifiques entre l'Afrique, l'Europe et l'AmĂ©rique.

L’objectif principal de l’école Ă©tait de fournir aux participantes et participants une prĂ©paration solide aux concepts fondamentaux et avancĂ©s de la gĂ©omĂ©trie diffĂ©rentielle, leur permettant ainsi de lire des articles spĂ©cialisĂ©s et d’aborder des problĂ©matiques de recherche nĂ©cessitant une expertise gĂ©omĂ©trique approfondie.

L’école a accueilli des participantes et participants venus de GuinĂ©e, du Burkina Faso, du Cameroun, du SĂ©nĂ©gal et de Mauritanie. La participation active de plusieurs femmes a Ă©galement marquĂ© cet Ă©vĂ©nement, soulignant l’importance de leur engagement dans la recherche mathĂ©matique.

Professor Chiara Franceschini explores Markov chains at the Lahore University of Management Sciences in Pakistan.

From November 22 to December 7, 2024, Professor Chiara Franceschini of the UniversitĂ  di Modena e Reggio Emilia, Italy, gave a course entitled "Probability and Statistics" at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). This course, devoted mainly to discrete time Markov chains, was attended by 17 participants, including 4 women.

Du 22 novembre au 7 décembre 2024, la professeure Chiara Franceschini de l'Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia, en Italie, a donné un cours intitulé "Probability and Statistics" à la Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). Ce cours, consacré principalement aux chaßnes de Markov en temps discret, a rassemblé 17 participants, dont 4 femmes.

"Branching Processes and their Applications": a course delivered by Professor Ibrahima Dramé at Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Ivory Coast.

From December 7 to 14, 2024, Professor Ibrahima Dramé from the Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Senegal, led a course at Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Ivory Coast, as part of the Master 2 programme. The course, entitled "Branching Processes and their Applications", explored discrete-time Galton-Watson processes, representing successive generations, as well as continuous-time branching processes, modelling populations reproducing and dying at random times.

Professor Dramé underlined the remarkable commitment of the students, as well as their motivation to pursue research in this field.

Ce cours, intitulĂ© "Branching Processes and their Applications", a explorĂ© les processus de Galton-Watson en temps discret, reprĂ©sentant les gĂ©nĂ©rations successives, ainsi que les processus de branchement en temps continu, modĂ©lisant les populations se reproduisant et mourant Ă  des instants alĂ©atoires.

Le professeur Dramé a souligné l'engagement remarquable des étudiantes et étudiants, ainsi que leur motivation à poursuivre des recherches dans ce domaine.

From March 31 to May 9, 2025, the "Arithmetic geometry of K3 surfaces" programme will be held at the Bernoulli Center in Lausanne. The programme consists of 5 weeks of research collaborations (working groups, research seminars) capped off by a one week workshop.

The deadline for requests for financial support is January 6, 2025.
