The 9th European Congress of Mathematics (ECM) was held in Sevilla, Spain, from July 15 to 19 2024. Organised by the European Mathematical Society (EMS), the event was a great success, attracting 1,400 participants from 70 countries. The congress showcased European mathematics from various perspectives, including research, applications, education, and history.
During this event, CIMPA played an active role in the ECM scholarship selection committee for the Global South, alongside MarĂa de los Ăngeles GarcĂa Ferrero, Mirta Maria Castro Smirnova (chair), Martina Magliocca, and Lidia FernĂĄndez. Thanks to this support, mathematicians from the Global South were able to present their research and fully engage in the congress. CIMPA, in collaboration with CIRM, EMS-CDC, ICTP, ISP, and LMS, also organised a mini-symposium titled "Shared Horizons: collaborations between Europe and the Global South." This event provided a platform for the laureates to discuss the state of mathematics in their countries, to strengthen collaboration between Europe and the Global South, and to give a scientific presentation.
2024 SUMMER HIGHLIGHTS: CIMPA ACTIVITIES AROUND THE WORLD
LES FAITS MARQUANTS DE L'ĂTĂ 2024 : ACTIVITĂS DU CIMPA Ă TRAVERS LE MONDE
This summer has been particularly dynamic for CIMPA, with numerous activities organised across the globe. These include CIMPA Schools, CIMPA Courses, and events held in partnership with other institutions.
The ICMU (International Centre for Mathematics in Ukraine) Summer School on âProbability, Geometry, and Machine Learningâ took place in Lviv, Ukraine, from July 14 to August 7. This summer school introduced participants to the challenges and techniques found at the rich intersection of high-dimensional probability, convex geometry, machine learning, and optimal transport. The summer university welcomed four eminent researchers, each of whom presented a mini-course comprising four lectures, three of which were funded by CIMPA.
Mark Rudelson (University of Michigan, USA) presented a series of lectures on "Limit Distribution of the Eigenvalues of a Symmetric Random Matrix". Wilhelm Klingenberg (Durham University, UK) covered "An Introduction to Optimal Transport", while Samuël Borza (International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA), Italy) discussed "Sub-Riemannian Geometry".
From June 17 to 20, 2024, two online courses were recorded, providing valuable expertise in specialised mathematical fields. You can watch on carmin.tv and YouTube.
INTRODUCTION TO SINGULAR PERTURBATIONS AND BOUNDARY LAYERS
This course was presented by Bouchra Bensiali, an assistant professor at Ăcole Centrale Casablanca, Morocco. It covers the fundamental concepts of singular perturbations and boundary layers, which are essential notions in mathematical analysis and applied physics.
From January 27 to February 28, 2025 the Thematic Month "Singularities, Differential Equations, Transcendence" will be held at CIRM (Marseille, France). The deadline for requests for financial support is September 15, 2024.
From April 14 to July 11, 2025 , the Thematic Programme "Higher Rank Geometric Structures" will be held at IHP (Paris, France). The deadline for requests for financial support is November 15, 2024.
The CIMPA Courses program consists in funding the visit of a lecturer to teach a master's or research level course in Mathematics within the geographic areas of CIMPA's activities.
The Call for Applications is open permanently, projects for CIMPA Courses may be submitted at any time during the year.
